Austin Shafran

Democratic City Council candidate Austin Shafran, running to replace indicted incumbent Councilman Dan Halloran, has received the endorsement of 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, New York City’s largest union.

“Austin is a real progressive who will fight hard for quality healthcare and good jobs for all working people,” said Kevin Finnegan, political director of 1199 SEIU.

The addition of the 1199 endorsement adds to Shafran’s already widespread labor support and gives his campaign some extra foot soldiers as he looks to establish himself among a crowded field of candidates which includes Paul Vallone, brother of Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. and son of former Council Speaker Peter Vallone, as well as former assemblyman John Duane, and urban planner Paul Graziano. Shafran has already received the support of Hotel Trades Council, SEIU 32BJ, the New York City Central Labor Council, as well as the Working Families Party. Shafran most recently served in the Cuomo administration as vice president of public affairs for the state’s economic development agency.
